Key Performance Indicators

Key performance indicators, or KPIs, are the heart of any scorecard. KPIs are important measures that focus on a specific business objective. KPIs should be easy to understand and empower users to take action. KPIs are meant to be leading indicators that give you an early warning of performance issues.

KPI Groups

KPIs are organized into groups that associate them with a larger goal. This grouping of KPIs gives you a balanced perspective of the activities needed to achieve the business goal.

Sparkline

Sparklines are word-sized graphs that show multiple data points in a small space. The sparkline on the scorecard shows the value of the KPI for the trailing 12 months. This gives you a quick picture of your performance over time without having to drill down to the KPI report.

You can hover your mouse cursor over the line to see the actual value.

Value

Each KPI has a current value. On the each scorecard, these values are month-to-date calculations that are updated nightly.

Bullet Chart

The bullet chart is another compact graphic that helps visualize the performance of the KPI. The background colors of the bullet chart encode the qualitative ranges of “Poor”, “Satisfactory”, and “Good” performance. The horizontal line shows the current value of the KPI stated as a percentage of the goal. The vertical bar shows the goal.

The color of the horizontal bar indicator gives you an immediate sense of how close you are to reaching your goals. The bar is red if the current KPI value is less than 50% of the goal. Otherwise, it is blue.

When you hover your mouse cursor over the horizontal bar, a pop-up window is displayed showing the current value, goal, and percent to goal.

Scorecard Links

When you click on the KPI name, a sub-menu is displayed. You can navigate to a detailed explanation of the KPI or to the KPI Goal Entery page.

Clicking on the View Details link opens a dashboard that shows the KPI value and goal per month along with related statistics that help you understand how the KPI is calculated.
